Spring Showers Brings... Summer Hail Storms?

We didn't know much about South East Colorado before we decided to move here, so let me tell you that learning about the weather (by experiencing it first hand) has been quite an adventure!

Living remote, you often don't have an accurate weather channel forecast. So we depend a lot of time and effort trying to decide which of the weather forecasts for the town 30+ minutes away is most relevant. We have found that severe storms happen FREQUENTLY. Typically not very long, but they are very often strong storms without any warning.

A few weeks back we knew we had about a week of thunderstorms coming up so we had begun making preparations.

We got this sick generator tent that protects our RV generator from rain and snow!

But what we didn't plan for, was the repairs the RV would need when it encountered these strong Summer storms.

I will preface this storm with the fact that our RV is not brand new, our family has lived here on and off for a few years, so it has seen some shit. One example is a microburst, essentially a mini-tornado, that did some damage to one of our skylight vents about 3 years ago. Due to some acrophobia, Sam had repaired the damage with some trusty ducktape. It turns out that after 3 years of sun, heat, and other weather, the duck tape wasn't strong enough to hold the integrity of this vent during an hour and a half of pea to golf-ball-sized hail. Yes... an hour and a half!!!

What started as an oh crap, we have a leak!

We sprung a leak!

Turned into...

over an inch and a half of hail on the ground that fell over the course of ninety minutes.

And no more vent hahaha

Just for entertainment, we will share the makeshift "vent" that we have been using for about two weeks while we source the replacement parts. Let us introduce you to "DuckVent." As Jen always says, "if you can't duck it... ____ it!"

Quarter size hail broke through the RV vent
All "hail" has broken loose!

Unfortunately, this wasn't the only casualty.

To this hole-punched disaster. It was painful to watch.

The good news is no one was hurt and everything else could be replaced. But it was a good wake-up call. We have decided to make some changes to our homestead to hopefully make things better for our family. Can't wait to keep you guys updated on the upcoming changes!
